Welcome to Spotty Dog Training Classes

Please come to the classes 5 minutes early to get parked and let your dog come and have a sniff and settle in our paddock. If you haven’t been to a Spotty Dog lesson before, this will be a new environment for your dog, so it’s good to let them feel at home and sniffing is very calming for them.

What you need to bring to a puppy foundation or improvers class

  • We use positive reinforcement to teach new exercises that means LOTS AND LOTS of high value treats (HVT).  This is a treat that your dog will do backflips for!!! It’s something they completely love so we’re not talking dog biscuits or kibble. Things like cooked chicken, hot dogs, cheese, ham, homemade liver cake etc.  If you’re not sure, do a taste test and see which your dog loves.  Because we use lots of rewards over the session, as this is how we communicate that your dog is doing a great job, you can adjust their breakfast/lunch slightly to make way for their treats. We do not advise skipping a meal as a hungry dog is not a focused dog!

  • Delivery and timing of the reward is crucial……a treat pouch is great to get to the HVT easily and quickly.

  • A toy that dog likes to play with, ideally a rope toy, tuggy toy, ball on a rope.

  • A mat/towel/blanket (please note the ground may be wet). This helps your dogs to settle in their new environment.  We also do mat work in classes.

  • Water bowl and water will be provided but you can also bring your own, especially if the weather is warm.

  • Poo bags for the obvious.

  • Some of our exercises will be done on long training lines, THAT WE PROVIDE, we therefore recommend harnesses for your dogs. We also recommend a harness with a front D ring, as well as the one on the back, this is helpful for loose lead walking, something like a Perfect Fit Harness is ideal. https://www.perfect-fit-dog-harness.com/PFSizing/ But is not necessary.  Please note that no prong collars, choke chains or slip leads are allowed in class and retractable leads are not suitable for training purposes.
